Which is the better place to be an expat?
On multiple occasions during my time here in Hong Kong, conversations comparing Hong Kong and Singapore have come up.
I often hear Hong Kongers call Singapore, “Boring!”
But in my opinion, if you can’t have a good time in Singapore, the problem is YOU!
However, that being said, I think now is the time to finally decide which city is better, Hong Kong or Singapore?
FOOD
Both places are known for their outstanding restaurants and cuisine.
RENT
While both cities are expensive, Hong Kong takes the top spot for highest rents in Asia.
Mr.J reluctantly picks Singapore, choosing more space for less money.
NIGHTLIFE
Get your groove on or hit the pub for a lively chat.
Mr.J prefers his hangovers in Hong Kong. While both cities boast impressive party options, only one literally goes all night long!
FAMILY LIFE
When the party is over, where do you want to be?
Mr.J gives a slight edge to Singapore. Tough to beat a picnic on the grass of the Botanic Garden in Singapore.
HEALTH CARE
We all get sick… Where do you want to be when you really need help?
Bloomberg ranked Singapore’s health care 2nd in the world! Just after…Hong Kong! Mr.J has really appreciated HK’s health care options, so he gives HK the nod.
CONVENIENCE
From transport to amenities, which city is the most convenient?
Tough to beat having everything from a pub to a playground within a square block…(is that safe?!!)
Mr.J picks an easy win for Hong Kong.
SOCIETY
You can’t live in a bubble! Who do you want to be surrounded by?
Mr.J is going with the friendlier Singaporeans. (In his opinion!)
WEATHER
Do you like the heat all year round or the extreme seasons of Hong Kong?
Mr.J takes the seasons of Hong Kong. I like my sweaters!
WORK
Singapore was ranked the best place in the world to do business in 2014.
Mr.J is taking the HK teacher’s life and diversity of Hong Kong over the Lion City.
So, for me it’s tight, but Hong Kong takes the cake 5-4! I guess I’m in the right place for now.
How did you do? Did I miss an essential element to deciding the best place to live? Let me know in the comments below.
Here’s a video by someone who disagrees with me… 🙂
Wherever you live, make it a good one!
Mr.J
I was born in Singapore and have been living in Hong Kong for 4yrs. My only three votes for Singapore were family life, nightlife and society. I’m kinda surprised. Everytime people in the bar asks me why I wanna stay in Hong Kong, my answer always is I Love Central, I Love Tung Chung, and I Love Hong Kong, lol
Hey LtYankee!
Thanks for commenting!
So, you think the nightlife in Singapore is better than Hong Kong?! how so?
Mr.J
Yea…nightlife. Actually it took me an hour thinking about that. Long story short, I have some great memories before I came to Hong Kong, and I don’t have any relatives or close friends in Hong Kong(of course I will, lol). But all my hangovers are in Hong Kong, although 99% of my college mates don’t like bars & parties(surprise!). So fairly, for me, Hong Kong 1, Singapore 1. I believe a couple of years later, I would vote for Hong Kong for sure. =]
