Victoria is a member of the International girl group BLUSH. Born in Liverpool, UK, she grew up in Hong Kong and now currently resides in Los Angeles.
I know you’ve been asked this a million times, but can you let our readers know a little about your band Blush, and how you came together?
No worries, always ready to spread the Blush Crush! Blush is the first Pan Asian Girl group made up of members from India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and China. A talent search called Project Lotus brought us together. Think of a mix between American Idol and Next Top Model, with performances every week a girl from each country was sent home until we were formed on the 29th Nov 2010. Since then we’ve shared the stage with acts like Justin Bieber, The Black Eyed Peas, Jessie J, Carly Rae Jepsen, Aerosmith, PSY, Cee Lo Green, Diana Ross and the legend that we are honored to affectionately call Uncle Quincy Jones.
Now that you’re living the life in sunny California, besides friends and family, what do you miss most about Hong Kong?
OMG nothing beats HK convenience! You can get so many things done in a day! You think traffic is bad in HK, wait til u get to LA! There’s barely any public transport compared to HK where you’re spoilt for choice, MTR, Bus, Minibus, Tram, Taxi, Ferry. I also miss walking everywhere in HK. I would take a 40 minute walk from Wanchai to Midlevels and not even think twice about it, but here going down the street, or even walking a couple of blocks feels like eternity. Makes for a very sedentary lifestyle or dependency on cars. But then you’re stuck in traffic, They’ve even made up names like Carmagedon and Jamzilla!!!
Growing up in Hong Kong, I know you’ve seen an incredible amount of changes over the years, but what change or growth would you still like to see happen in Hong Kong?
It’s amazing how quickly HK changes, even being away for the majority of the last 3 years, I’m stunned by all the changes every time I come back. But there is one change that I don’t feel has been for the better and that is the fact that HK’s level of English is declining! It may be hilarious to mock the English Cantonese accent, but it’s also pretty sad that that’s what we’re known for. What’s even sadder is when expats are trying to learn and practice Cantonese they just get shot down and laughed at by locals. It’s pretty disrespectful and rude when someone else is trying to learn your language.
If you had a spare 1 million dollars just rotting away in your closet, which cause would you give it to?
Is there a Genie somewhere that can quadruple that amount or more?? My heart aches when I see or hear children suffering from illnesses, or loneliness as they’re waiting for a loving couple to take them home. My heart also gets very hurt when I see little children and women taken advantage of and sold into human slavery. I know a million dollars won’t change the world, but it’s a start towards searching for a cure, alleviating pain, providing support, and educating the world that some things are not ok!
I haven’t named any specific charities or foundations only because there are so many all over the world, big and small that do amazing work and all deserve our support.
But ultimately, it’s the time that we give and the voice that we lend to these causes that are worth more than gold! I hope one day I can do more than just attend events and post on FB about these amazing causes.
Actually Blush has just recorded a great girl power song that we hope can be used as a campaign song for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That would be an amazing way for us to lend our voices, raise awareness and empower women all over the world!
What’s next for Blush? Any chance in seeing you perform in Hong Kong anytime soon?
We’ve been in the studio a lot recording for an upcoming album. Its been really cool as we’re getting more involved with the recording process with writing and also our sound is more grown up and edgier. We’re so excited for the world to hear our new tracks and of course see the new Music videos that will go with!
We will be performing in the US this summer, but I hear we might be making a stop in Asia this fall, so keep your eyes out for more updates on our website
Thanks so much for the interview Victoria! All the best to you and the Blush crew! If anyone has any questions for Victoria, she’s agreed to answer your questions below, so let her have it!!
Cheers,
Mr.J
That’s awesome that you’re getting to write some of the songs. What is your inspiration?
Hi Juls, Thanks for your question! Actually our experiences, thoughts and passions are great places to look for inspiration. They’re also the most genuine. When we write as a group, we’ve all experienced situations differently and come with ideas from different angles which is great as we hope our songs can touch lives from all walks of life!
Thanks Mr. J. for a great interview!
Awesome to see a hk girl performing with some of the world’s most acclaimed artists!
Who did inspire / impress her the most 🙂 ?
Cheers Adrien!
